This pilot study is testing whether a special type of ultrasound called contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) can help detect if pancreatic cancer has come back after surgery. People may be eligible to participate if they had surgery to remove pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) from the head or body of the pancreas and are currently being monitored for cancer recurrence using CT scans. The study plans to enroll 10 participants: 5 people whose cancer has returned and 5 people whose cancer has not returned, based on their standard medical imaging results. Participants will not be randomly assigned to groups. Researchers will use a Logiq E10 ultrasound machine with CEUS technology to perform an ultrasound examination of the area where the surgery was performed. The goal is to determine whether CEUS can be a practical and useful tool for identifying local pancreatic cancer recurrence.
The sensitivity and specificity of ultrasound imaging can be improved by intravenous (IV) injection of gas microbubbles as vascular contrast agents, which can enhance both Doppler and grayscale signals by up to 27 dB. These contrast agents not only enhance the backscattered ultrasound signals, but at sufficient acoustic pressures they also act as nonlinear oscillators. These oscillations generate significant energy components in the received echo signals, which span the range of possible frequency emissions from subharmonics through ultraharmonics. These nonlinear bubble echoes can be separate…
Inclusion Criteria: * Individuals must meet all of the following inclusion criteria in order to be eligible to participate in the study: 1. Be a patient that underwent surgical resection of PDAC located in the head or body of the pancreas and are being followed for recurrence with CT imaging as part of their standard of care. 2. Be 18 years of age or older. 3. If the subject is of child-bearing potential, must have a negative pregnancy test. 4. Be conscious and able to comply with study procedures. 5. Have read and signed the IRB approved consent form for participating in the study…
Lumason will be administered as an intravenous bolus injection of up to 2.4 mL prior to CEUS imaging
One transabdominal contrast-enhanced ultrasound examination of the pancreatic surgical site will be performed using a Logiq E10 scanner with a curvilinear (C1-6) probe following administration of Lumason.
